Ratings and Q&A

GXWH20S is rated 2.4545 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A terrific filter! I've had this filter as a whole-house filtering unit for over a year. It really cleans the water, turning the white filter brown. Previously, all of that sediment was present in my dishwasher, clothes washer, shower and heating system. Many people don't understand this. After Hurricane Sandy, we had to replace all of our appliances and we wanted to be sure that our water-based appliances used only filtered water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I purchased this. I installed the GE-GXWH20S about five years ago and have been happy with it. There have been several times when our co-op utility water service has experienced a break in a line, and muddy water and debris entered the system. Having this sediment filter prevents particles from getting into the house line and clogging screens and wreaking havoc with the toilet fill valve. After the utility replaced my water meter, the filter caught a big glob of silicone grease and a piece of brown leaf. I have used 50 micron pleated filters and 15 micron string-wound filters. I tried a carbon-wrapped filter once but it was too fine and reduced water pressure in the house. I have not had a problem with the red pressure release valve, but have had a problem with the o-rings stretching whenever replacing or trying to apply silicone grease. I find though that when the 0-ring is stretched, I can cut out a small section so it fits in the groove properly, and it still creates a water-tight seal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for 7 years and then "BANG" I've had one of these for 7 years. I started a load of laundry this evening and heard a loud bang and the sound of water running. The filter jar had cracked for no apparent reason. Fortunately, Home Depot still carries these. I bought a new one and was able to put the new filter jar on the old unit and was back in business quickly. I'll replace the rest of it when I have more time. I rated this 4/5 because it lasted 7 years with no issues, and I like the carbon filter cartridges that can be used in it. The Cuno filter I had before lasted less than 3 years before leaking uncontrollably.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design The red release button leaks. Small particles can get into the valve and not allow it to seal resulting in the leak. This is a design flaw there is nothing you can do about it but hope that the particles get flushed out. The only solution is to call your plumber and replace it with a better designed unit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Red Pressure Relief Button Leaking!! I have had to change this complete filter system twice in less than a year due to the red pressure relief button leaking after replacing the filter. I have to remove and reinstall the filter about 3 to 4 times and keep trying to reseat the button until it stops leaking. From reading the reviews online this seems to be a constant issue and is unacceptable. Home Depot has replaced it once for me, but now they will not replace this one as it over 90 days old. I have also read the reviews regarding flushing a toilet or opening a sink nearby, this is a workaround not a solution. Extremely Poor Design.
